MSU Student Science Communication Training Program

The MSU Science Festival is pleased to announce a training program encouraging undergraduate and graduate students at MSU to engage in science communication and outreach activities. This program will provide training, mentorship, networking opportunities, as well as direct experience in science communication through Science Festival events and programs.

The MSU Science Festival seeks to attract a pool of up to twenty applicants that is both qualified and diverse. MSU Science Festival Virtual Expo Zone 

The Science Festival will be hosting a virtual expo on an online platform that will allow you to build out a digital booth with educational resources, videos, and activity guides. In addition, you will be asked to give a short, half hour live presentation via zoom. Formats for these presentations may vary, and can include talks, demonstrations, performances, game shows, film screenings or anything you would like to design. The Science Festival team will work with you 1:1 to design a program of your choosing. 

 

The MSU Science Festival Virtual Expo Zone will take place on Saturday April 3, 10, and 17 from 10am - 5pm. 

 

Stipend: $500 + $350 for programmatic needs (ie. marketing, video editing, supplies and materials, etc.)

Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours January - April, 2021

Requirements: 

  • Attend all required training sessions listed below 

  • Present at the 2021 MSU Science Festival’s Digital Expo on either April 3, 10, or April 17 

  • Create 3-5 social media posts to promote your SciFest event and share your science

  • Check in with SciFest staff for 1:1 meetings at least 3 times during your time in the program

  • Schedule two half hour consulting sessions with Story Collider (arranged by SciFest team)

  • Complete pre and post program evaluation

  • MI STEM Network Next Generation Science Standards workshop January 16, 10am-12pm​

  • AAAS Science Communication workshop January 30, 10am-1pm

  • SciFest marketing & presenter webinar February 3, 12pm-1pm

  • Story Collider storytelling workshop February 20, 12pm-3pm

Program Development Deadlines

  • Initial 1:1 meetings with SciFest team scheduled throughout the month of February

  • 1:1 consultations with Story Collider team scheduled throughout February or March

  • Program outlines are due by March 19

  • Final 1:1 meetings with SciFest team should be scheduled at least two weeks prior to your event

*Dates and times are subject to change

**Participating as a K12 school program presenter is optional. Participants interested in presenting during the Science Festival's school programs should reach out Katherine at hagmanka@msu.edu 

***A 30 minute livestreamed presentation is required at least once between 10am and 4pm on either April 3,10, or 17 during the Virtual Expo Day. You will also be required to create a digital booth.
