The Kalamazoo Valley Museum will participate in Statewide Astronomy Night (SWAN) on April 12 from 4pm to 8:30pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in a number of astronomy-related activities and planetarium shows, free of charge, that are suitable for any age. Among the events planned are featured talks about Michigan's ties to the space program and tips on how to photograph the night sky. In addition, families can learn how to stargaze in their backyards, see a planetarium show or take in a children’s show in our theater.

Kingman Museum partners with Michigan State University and organizations around the Mitten to celebrate Statewide Astronomy Night (SWAN). Participants are encouraged to set up telescopes in neighboring Leila Arboretum.

The Shiras Planetarium will offer stations with astronomy activities for all ages from 6pm-7:30pm. At 7:30pm a star show will be given. Come tour the spring night sky, highlighting the stars and planets visible in the northern hemisphere. All events are free!

The Abrams Planetarium will premiere a new show related to space exploration at 7pm, followed by a planetarium based talk on how the early missions of Mercury and Gemini helped prepare the U.S. to win the space race against the Soviet Union with the Apollo Missions. Hear the history of the Apollo program and how the space race essentially ended with the Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975.

We will have multiple telescopes and volunteers to share the night sky with the public. We have a general astronomy discussion of telescopes, as well as what is currently going on in the night sky.

Come enjoy free nature demonstrations at 7 PM and a visual presentation about backyard stargazing at 8 PM inside the Saginaw Bay Visitor Center. Afterward (and weather permitting), planetarium staff and members of local astronomy clubs will have binoculars and telescopes set up on park grounds to observe the real sky. The activities and talk go on regardless of weather but observing is weather dependent.

As part of MSU's Statewide Science Festival, the Grand Rapids Public Museum and Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association (GRAAA) present hands-on activities for kids and adults alike with telescope demonstrations and presentations at the Veen Observatory, beginning at 8:30pm. Observing the quarter moon and other sky objects will follow as the sky darkens (weather permitting). Assisting with the event will be members of the GRAAA, who operate the Observatory with support from the Museum. There are three large telescopes at the Veen, including one which can be operated robotically. Portable telescopes will also be set up on the grounds for visitors to use.
