Want to take an opportunity to explore the outdoors and get to know plants, trees, and critters while contributing to local citizen science efforts? Join our BioBlitz Exploration at Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center. A BioBlitz is an event where scientists and the general public work together to survey an area in an attempt to record all the living species there. We will be using iNaturalist to catalog the various flora (plants) and fauna (animals) observed. There will also be a chance to experience a bird banding demonstration and other educational activities.

Join us for our Earth Day Extravaganza, a day of identifying and removing invasive species, clipping branches, mulching trails, picking up trash, and working on several ongoing park projects, as we practice civic service through stewardship. Help us make this year's Earth Day Extravaganza our largest volunteer work day ever! We will also have ongoing learning opportunities from our staff and our partners at Capital Area District Libraries.

Show some love to Mother Earth by joining us at the Brightmoor Artisans Collective (BAC) for a Community Clean-Up. Activities will include trash pick-up; preparing BAC raised beds and Learning Garden in anticipation of Spring; weeding, mulching, and pruning around the BAC facilities and adjacent public transportation stations; and maintenance of Brightmoor Farmway and BAC signage. BAC will provide clean-up equipment, though volunteers are welcome to bring their own. We will have FREE popcorn and seeds, plus music in celebration of Earth Day. All are welcome to join in the clean-up regardless of age, ethnicity, orientation, or neighborhood affiliation!

Great Lakes Sea Lampreys: From Crisis to Control

Sea lamprey are an incredibly destructive invasive species that suction onto the sides of fish and drink their blood. Upon their invasion, sea lampreys contributed to the collapse of the Great Lakes fishery in the 1950s and 60s. Come learn all about sea lamprey: how they invaded, how they're controlled, and why they are a problem. Live sea lampreys will be on hand for those brave enough to come face to face with the vampires of the Great Lakes.

Vernal pools are more than just mud puddles in the woods that dry out in the summer! They are extremely important and diverse features in our forest ecosystems that provide critical habitat for a variety of organisms. These pools are important sources of food and water in early spring when very little else is available. Join us in MSU's Baker Woodlot to look and listen for the unique invertebrates, amphibians, and other critters that make these special pools their home.

Explore our amazing Earth in arts-based activities that engage your senses and your mind. View a Science on a Sphere (SOS) projection, featuring species recently removed from the endangered species list. Participate in an interactive workshop to create your own linocut prints on a small hand-powered printing press and write poems to celebrate that delisted species. Experienced printmaker Samantha Earley and experienced public poetry artist Nancy DeJoy will create images for the projection and help all participants create their own pieces of art to take home. Explore our amazing Earth with this and other arts-based activities.

Potter Park Zoo is hosting our first ever BioBlitz! Community members are invited to come together for a guided walk along the River Trail to find and document as many species as possible using smartphones and iNaturalist. Help us survey the local environment and record the diversity of life we find. Enjoy a walk in nature and contribute to citizen science at the same time! No experience needed.
